Program Boats

The Optimist is a single-handed eight-foot dinghy designed specifically for junior sailors. It has become the international standard in junior instruction due to its stability and safety. Optimists are easy to transport and a great first boat for junior sailors.

The Laser is an Olympic class boat sailed by juniors and adults. The Laser is a great option for single-handed sailors who are too big or too old to race an Optimist. Lasers offer three different sail plans, so you can use the sail that is appropriate for your weight or the weather. The Laser Radial is great for lighter sailors who do not want a full rig. We typically have more Laser Radials than full rigs in our classes.

The Club 420 is the most popular and versatile double-handed junior boat in North America. The boat is designed for sailors above 100 pounds, and has a main sail, jib, and spinnaker. Junior, high school, and collegiate sailing programs use the 420 as the basis for their programs.

The Ideal 18 is an eighteen-foot keelboat designed to resist planing and extensive dinghy hiking. The cockpit design makes it comfortable for up to four sailors, but two can manage. Combine this with a main, jib, and spinnaker, and students learn more teamwork oriented rigging and sailing.

Introduction to Sailing

Introduction to Sailing is a two-week class designed to motivate those just getting started. The class is structured to meet the needs of juniors (ages 6-12) with a solid ability to swim and with little or no sailing experience. Once grouped according to age, two patient and enthusiastic instructors provide fun and engaging activities to build seamanship skills: emphasizing knots, rigging, handling, and safety. Juniors finish the class excited about sailing and motivated to continue learning!

Intro juniors sail every day at the club. Regardless of the morning or afternoon class time, all enrolled juniors are encouraged to participate in the supervised fun during Wednesday Night Activities (Ideal 18 cruises, model sailboat races, and other seamanship/nautical games are featured each week). All sailors are invited join us for lunch during their class days to spend time with coaches and friends.

Full-day sessions are available to support sailors ready for more instruction and a longer day on the water. If this meets the needs of your sailor, register for a back-to-back AM and PM class.

Equipment: Juniors need their own life jacket.

Boats: Club maintained Optimists and Ideal 18s

Class Days, Times & Rates: Morning Option (IS-AM), Monday - Thursday (9 am - 12 pm), juniors are welcome to return for Wednesday Night Activities (3 - 7 pm). Parents and families are invited to gather to watch junior races and on-the-water activities at 5:30 pm. Note: In observance of the holiday and other club activities, there are no junior sailing classes on July 3 and 4. Note: The cost of boat maintenance is included in the rates below – $30 per class.

Beginner 1 & 2

Beginner 1 & 2 is a four or eight-week class designed for the novice sailor, (age 8 or have completed 2nd grade to age 15). Once grouped according to age and experience into the first or second level class, sailors work to strengthen skills in seamanship and broaden their knowledge of rigging, boat handling, rules of the road, and navigating the Tred Avon River. Sailors spend more time at the tiller and build their confidence on the water.

Beginners sail every day at the club and do not attend junior regattas. All enrolled juniors are encouraged to participate in the supervised fun during Wednesday Night Activities (Ideal 18 cruises, model sailboat races, and other seamanship/nautical games are featured each week). As sailors show interest in racing, a "Beginners Only" Wednesday Night Race is scheduled for juniors to enjoy some light competition.

Equipment: Juniors need their own life jacket and boat. Boats are available for rent at $50 per week. Availability is limited and it is best to register as soon as possible. Boats are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis with a rental agreement during registration.

Boats: Optimists

Class Days, Times & Rates: Monday - Thursday (9 am - 3 pm), juniors may stay for Wednesday Night Activities (3 - 7 pm). Parents and families are invited to gather to watch junior activities at 5:30 pm. Note: In observance of the holiday and other club activities, there are no junior sailing classes on July 3 and 4.

Private Lessons

Private Lessons are offered on Monday and Tuesday after regular instruction ends, from 3 - 6 pm. Sportsman

Sportsman is a four or eight-week class designed for confident sailors (ages 9-18), who have advanced through the Beginner Class or have a strong foundation in seamanship, rigging, boat handling and safety. This class offers juniors looking for a rounded sailing experience that balances racing and the excitement and joys of sailing other boats. Juniors build and grow a basic understanding of racing one-design dinghies, but also venture on destination sails aboard larger sailboats and dinghies to broaden their sailing knowledge of rigging, weather, tides, currents, navigation and seamanship skills. During the summer juniors will sail and race the boat they bring and those available through the club.

Equipment: Juniors need their own life jacket and boat.

Boats: Optimists, Lasers, C420s, and keelboats

Class Days, Times & Rates: Monday - Thursday (9 am - 3 pm), juniors may stay for Wednesday Night Activities (3 - 7 pm). Parents and families are invited to gather to watch junior races at 5:30 pm. Note: In observance of the holiday and other club activities, there are no junior sailing classes on July 3 and 4.

Sportsman juniors sail at the club each day and are encouraged to participate in Wednesday Night Races and/or attend Chesapeake Bay Junior Regattas, although racing is not the focus of this class. Coaching is provided at a regatta, when junior interest and parent support is established at least one week before the event.

Opti Green Fleet

Opti Green Fleet is a four or eight-week class designed for the sailor just out of Beginner 2 and/or is now interested in racing. The Opti Green Fleet is the learning fleet for beginner racers. This class teaches a novice racer how to confidently sail in 10-15 knots of wind, navigate a triangle course with boat control, and understand the basics of racing rules. With an emphasis on FUN, sailors accomplish these goals to develop a love of racing and become ready for the more competitive age level fleets (White, Blue, and Red).

Equipment: Juniors need their own life jacket and boat.

Boats: Optimists

Class Days, Times & Rates: Monday - Thursday (9 am - 3 pm), juniors may stay for Wednesday Night Races (3 - 7 pm). Parents and families are invited to gather to watch junior races at 5:30 pm. Prizes are awarded to Green Fleeters after the races each Wednesday night. Note: In observance of the holiday and other club activities, there are no junior sailing classes on July 3 and 4.

Juniors sail at the club each day, except when an away regatta is scheduled. These regattas increase the total days of coaching and bring an added value to a junior's experience. Juniors are expected to attend each of the regattas listed in the schedule below. If a sailor cannot attend a scheduled regatta, other arrangements must be made. Note: A $25 fee per junior is included in the rates below to support stocking regatta coolers to ensure juniors are safely hydrated on the water.

C420/Laser Development Team

C420/Laser Development Team is a class with two approaches that supports those coming to sailing late in their junior years or transitions sailors maturing out of the Opti Class Championship Fleets into competitive C420 or Laser sailing. Two teams are formed based on junior interest, commitment and goals.

Recreational Sailing Goal: This team will receive instruction to build and grow a solid understanding of rigging and sailing C420s and Lasers, with the goal of recreational sailing on the Tred Avon River and casual participation in club and local racing.

Competitive Sailing Goal: This team will review the fundamentals of racing and build upon their prior knowledge of competitive Opti sailing to relate their understanding to competitive C420 and Laser sailing. Sailors on this team will rigorously work to master boat handling for the race course, starting strategies, tactics, boat speed, Advanced Racing Rules, and master an understanding of weather, tides, and currents as they relate to racing. Daily practice for this team will offer sailors the opportunities to sharpen their skills for success in local regattas and the confidence to compete at larger regattas outside the Chesapeake Bay.

Equipment: Juniors need their own life jacket and boat. We're on the water as much as possible and each junior should be prepared with the appropriate apparel to sail in any number of conditions. Juniors competing in regattas must also have CBYRA and US Sailing Membership.

Boat Rentals: Club maintained C420s and Lasers are available at $80 per week.

Class Days, Times & Rates: Juniors practice at the club each day (Monday - Thursday, 9 am - 3 pm), for a 2*, 4, 6, or 8 week session between the class dates. An extra week may be added to lengthen either of these session options for an additional $150.
