2008

Meet the Junior Sailing Program’s New Director:
Sarah Shattuck
As someone
who grew up sailing at TAYC and has been an instructor for a number of years, I
am thrilled to be returning as this summer’s Program Director! I have been
sailing since I was a young child, first riding on my father’s Etchells on Long
Island Sound, then learning to sail my Opti and later a 420 at TAYC. I raced
for a number of summers on the Chesapeake and beyond, and was involved in
starting a sailing program at both my high school (Gunston Day School) and
college (Mount Holyoke). I have taught sailing both at Tred Avon and on Long
Island Sound. I enjoy keelboat and dinghy racing, but also appreciate a good
day sail or adventure. As a certified teacher, I bring classroom experience to
the table. I’m currently teaching part time in Seattle, Washington. I look
forward to bringing my knowledge of teaching and of sailing back to the program
that gave me my “sea legs”. It is my goal to teach students how to be
competent, confident sailors while ultimately fostering a lifelong love of
sailing.

Coaches and
Instructors
|
Susannah Brooks
is returning for her fourth year as an instructor at TAYC. With a bag
full of tricks, ideas, and activities, Susannah is the perfect person to
greet our beginning Optimist sailors and guide them through their first
summer sailing in their own boats. Susannah grew up sailing in our
program, and raced in regattas around the bay. She enjoys spending her
summers teaching children and being out on the water.

Morgan Brooks is just finishing up her freshman year at NC State and
is happy to be returning to the Eastern Shore to teach sailing. As soon
she was old enough to sail, Morgan began taking
lessons at TAYC. It was here that she learned to both respect
the water and have fun sailing. She also developed her competitive edge
and became active in racing around the Bay, sailing an Opti. This
competitive spirit has served her well in the sailing world as well as
her newest passion:
competing in triathlons. She’s very excited to be returning to TAYC to
work with our Opti sailors.

Drew Calvert
is joining our team as an assistant in the Optimist program. He has
sailed both Optimists and 420’s at Tred Avon and around the bay, and is
currently a student at Saints Peter and Paul High School in Easton.
Drew is enthusiastic about passing his love of sailing on to new
sailors. |

Kyle Harris is
coming back to coach Tred Avon junior sailors for his third year.
Currently a college freshman, Kyle is sailing for College of Charleston
and is excited to bring back new ideas and drills to his students at
TAYC. Kyle is from Trappe. He sailed both Opti’s and Laser Radials in
our program and in many Chesapeake Bay Regattas. He placed third in
high point for Laser Radials in 2005 and is well-versed in Optimist,
Laser Radial and 420 sailing. |

Peter Zendt is
a junior from St. Andrew’s School who loves both sailing and the
outdoors. For the past three summers he has been in New Hampshire and
Nova Scotia hiking, biking and canoeing and now is excited about coming
back to TAYC. He spent several summers at TAYC sailing in Optis and 420s
and is glad to be returning to work with younger sailors and to spend a
summer on the Tred Avon River. Peter was initially taught how to sail by
this summer’s director, Sarah Shattuck, and is looking forward to
working with her and the rest of the staff. |
